Road Routes, Listed by Area
Albuquerque, El Paso (TX), Las CrucesSanta Fe, Selected Rural Roads
Gravel routes will also be listed on this page, as time allows.
There are endless lovely rural roads in NM, really too many to list. This page will mostly confine itself to popular training routes near urban aeas, with a few well known rural routes. For a more exaustive listing of routes around the state, please refer to the New Mexico Touring Society's website. This is a work in progress so I will try to add routes as I have time. Would you like to add a ride/route? Email me.

Albuquerque

Albuquerque has an extensive network of city bicycle routes and bicycle trails. (Actually multi use trails) See the City WebsiteOpen Street Maps, has a "Cycle Map" (rather a British term) layer that shows all bike routes and bikepaths. Google Maps has a similar feature.

UNM-East Central Fragment: How to get fromm UNM to points east without riding up Central and likely getting run over by a lowrider. If you are new to Albuquerque, this is a useful route to commit to memory.

"The Fingers" Fragments, These ride fragment shows the more or less standard way to do "fingers" in the South foothills of the Sandias. The main or south fingers leaves Tramway at Encantado and rejoins it at Manitoba.

Fruit Loop, 22 mi, 400 ft. A loop ride entirely within the Albuquerque city limits. Most of the ride is on dedicated bike paths. The North Diversion Channel path, the path just S of and parallel to Paseo del Norte and the Bosque path.

University/Rio Bravo/Volcanos Loop, The standard westside loop.

Tramway Loop, 30 mi, 1700 ft.  A very popular loop ride, taking in the well-known gentle climb up Tramway. Tramway is probably the most cycled road in New Mexico. The views of the Sandias are great. A nice ride in its own right, especially if fingers are added in.

Round The Mountain, ~65 mi,  4300 ft. This is pretty much the coolest ride around (pun intended), although not everyone agrees on this. This goes through Placitas and up to Sandia Ski Area the back way - on dirt, then down the crest road and back through Tijeras Canyon.

South 14 Options. Various rides gong south from Tijeras up into the Manzano Mts.  Maps coming.

Jemez Dam coming soon

Santa Fe
A couple of routes were sent me as they are normal group ride routes. The Prison Loop used ot be a NM road series race. It is west of town and pretty flat (for Santa Fe). The Galisteo loop is the 50 mile option at the Santa Fe Century.

Santa fe has an extensve and expanding network of bikepaths. I used to live in Santa Fe in 1993, and almost of the bikepaths are new since then. In a certain sense it is a little sad as some dirt trails have been replaced by paved paths. See Open Streets Maps.
